What is a De-Icer? A Winter Solution to Fish Kill and Winter Aeration

  • September 26, 2017

Fall is officially here, reminding us that as temperatures drop, it’s important to get a head start on preparing your water for the cold months ahead. As ice freezes over, bodies of water can essentially be suffocated. Without penetrating sunlight and water movement, any natural aeration is eliminated. An energy efficient pond de-icer is an easy solution to this.

What is a De-Icer?

The De-Icer, also known as the Ice-Away, is installed beneath the surface of the water and works to lift 500 gallons of water per minute upward to the surface, simultaneously drawing the warmer water from below. The uniquely designed motor mount/diffuser redirects the water flow outward creating a larger area of coverage. The Ice-Away is capable of keeping an 8-foot diameter area of open water for every foot of propeller depth. The average suspended depth is approximately 5ft up to a maximum of 8ft.

Since 1967 the De-Icer has helped keep ponds and bodies of water healthy throughout the winter months, maintaining open areas for ducks, geese, and other waterfowl.  The De-Icer can work as an aerator for bodies of water throughout the winter or as an outdoor fish pond de-icer, helping to prevent winter fish kills.

The De-Icer’s stainless steel Franklin Electric submersible motor is water cooled and lubricated making it eco-friendly. No seals and bearings make the product easy to maintain and mounting is simple with a single rope using the sling approach.

It is wise to get ahead of the cooler weather and begin prepping your bodies of water for fall and winter since the Ice-Away needs to be installed before the water freezes over.
