1/2″ Ice Melt Tubing 125′
1/2″ Ice Melt Tubing 125′ has slits every 24″ to push warm water from the bottom of your lake or pond to the surface to prevent freezing. It can also lead to pond turnover and even a fish kill. Bottom pond or lake water continually absorbs heat from the ground below. Using ice melt tubing or aeration diffusers, we can move this bottom water to the surface, keeping it from freezing. If you keep the ice open over the winter, your pond or lake will be healthier in the long run.
This is self-weighted tubing with aeration slits to give you more air spread out over a much bigger area. This price is for a 125′ roll and includes a plug on the end.
Why does keeping the ice open matter?
By keeping the ice open, you can help prevent a fish kill and pond turnover. It helps release toxic gasses released by anoxic sediment. Having the gasses trapped in your pond all winter can make for a nasty spring and require extra work to clean your pond when it thaws. Using aeration to keep ice from covering your pond also attracts wildlife during the winter months. Additionally, you want to ensure your ice is open to protect any expensive structures you have in your pond. These include boats, docks, and pilings.
It also helps keep your fish alive as one of the major reasons for winter fish kills is pond freeze up, which can prevent photosynthesis which produces much-needed oxygen.
We carry a wide range of airline and airline connectors. We carry unweighted direct burial tubing in 3/8” and ½” widths. In addition, we have weighted airlines in 3/8”, ½,” and 5/8” widths in lengths ranging from 50’ to 500’ along with connectors for all airlines.
There is an easy way to determine what kind of airline you will need. The general rule of thumb is if the application is above the water, use poly tubing. If it needs to be in the water, use weighted airline.
You can splice the two together using airline connectors and hose clamps. Always use hose clamps when connecting the weighted airline. You never want to have to worry about it becoming disconnecting. This will cause a loss of air to your airstone or rubber membrane air diffuser.
What is the difference between Weighted and non-weighted airlines?
Basically, the difference between weighted and non-weighted airlines for aeration is where you’re using the airline. If you are running an airline above ground, use a non-weighted airline. If you are running an airline from the shoreline to your Airstone or rubber membrane, you need to use a weighted airline. The weighted airline will stay in place under the water as opposed to the non-weighted airline, which will float. Investing in a weighted airline will make your life much easier than trying to wrestle a non-weighted airline into doing a job it was never meant for. When running an airline from your aeration system to the water’s edge, we recommend you bury it.
The last thing you want is to have to deal with a cut airline. The airline can be cut by a careless landscaper, broken when large equipment drives over it or damaged by animals. To save yourself the headache of discovering your airline has a hole, you should bury it when installing it. You do not need to bury it deeply; just 4-6 inches is sufficient to protect the line. If you feel your airline may be extra vulnerable, you can encase it in PVC before burying it.
