As we progress into fall, remember to keep an eye on your equipment. The shifting weather can sometimes affect your pond aeration fountains. Fall is a great time to bring your equipment out of the water and clean it before the winter comes.
How to Clean Your Fountains
Power Down
First, disconnect power from your fountain and secure the float. If you cannot remove the power cable, make sure you coil the cable up and protect the connection with a plastic bag. Store the power cable separate from the fountain and in a safe and dry place away from rodents. Remove the fountain and light kit from the float and store in a safe and dry place. A covered, dry, enclosed area like a shed, garage, barn or other storage area is best. Remember to keep the fountain in an upright position. We suggest keeping the packing carton the fountain came in and using it to store your fountain during the winter months.
If you know your aerating fountain pump or decorative fountain nozzle can’t handle the cold, go ahead and take it out and store out of the elements for the winter. Lockout the breaker to shut off the power source. If you cannot remove the power cable, make sure you coil the cable up and protect the connection with a plastic bag.
Clean and Inspect your Fountain
If you are in an area that does not get below freezing, the fall is a good time to clean and inspect your fountain and replace any worn or damaged parts. Inspect the power cable for nicks and wear. Give your equipment a good and thoroughly clean and dry before you store it. Look for any parts that appear worn down and may need to be replaced.
Replace Parts
Any time is a great time to order replacement parts, but especially after you’ve inspected your fountain or de-icer. If you are in an area that does not get below freezing, the fall is a good time to clean and inspect your fountain and replace any worn or damaged parts prior to storing for the winter.
